The other day, I noticed that we'd received our 3,000th placeblog submission!
I don't know exactly which one tipped us into the number 3,000. What's more important, though, is that all of them show us is that there are lots and lots of people who have amazing stories to tell about their lived experience in particular places...
Placeblogs can be about anything: dogs in Miami, lunch places in Manhattan, raising kids in Alaska, tech news in Texas, or fascinating photos from Viet Nam
Placeblogs will tell you how it's different living a dog's life in Miami, as opposed to a dog's life in Philadelphia? They can tell you what's fashionable in the Brooklyn real estate scene or why you should raise a kid in Alaska. And give you some insight as to who might buy an hotel in Morocco and what they're doing with it.
Placeblogs can tell you so much about where we live and how we live there.. we hope you'll certainly enjoy discovering them as much as we have!

In the past, the term expatriate strictly defined a person who’d been banished from his or her homeland for political reasons. But times change. With the ways we move around these days, many of us can probably call ourselves expatriates without ever being formally banished (I’m a New Jersey expat living in Massachusetts. Although I will admit I could’ve picked someplace a little warmer…)
There are a lot of placebloggers who are expats. They're living all over the world in curious cultural combinations. Here’s a short list of these newly added expat placeblogs:
Armchair Economist is the blog of an ex-pat South African living in Germany and writing about both Germany and South Africa. And economics.
Flint Expatriates is written by someone who used to live in Flint, MI but now lives in San Francisco. Look for the old car ads.
Eyes East is by a Bay Area resident now living in and traveling around Dalian, China -- he also writes some interesting posts on innovations in journalism.
Blizzardboy: A Kiwi in Japan is by an New Zealander (with a good sense of humor) somewhere in Japan.
Polly-Vous Francais? plots the adventures of a New Yorker now living on the Left Bank in Paris, and learning the language beyond the college level.
After getting back from the JTM conference, it hit me that summertime's a big time for conferences and other types of blogger-related gatherings. Here's a very short list of some upcoming conferences:
Today and tomorrow, Placeblogger will be attending the Journalism that Matters: a Passion for Place unconference at the University of Minnesota's McNamara Alumni Center.
A few weeks ago, I emailed Dan Knauss of the Riverwest Neighborhood Network to ask a few questions about his placeblog. What got me most interested in Dan's work is not just the beauty of the design, but the sscale of it--RNN covers news, events and a lot more for Milwaukee, WI's North End facing Lake Michigan.
Our latest Placeblogger profile highlights Trish Lewis, who chronicles the history of the oldest small town Minnesota on St. Vincent Memories. Since 2005, Trish has been sharing stories, pictures, and other wonderful artifacts about this place and the fascinating people who left their mark. Check out what she has to say about her special placeblog
The first of a new group of placeblogger profiles has hit our front page! Check out what Kevin LeMaster had to say about Building Cincinati, voted one of Cincinnati's ten best local blogs of 2007...
it's more than just a pretty facade
We've been thinking a lot about the folks who come here and enter their placeblogs--and you're a really eclectic bunch writing about all the little nooks and crannies of the world, not just the big metropolitan places.
That's what makes placebloggers so much fun! and you need to know more about each other...
So, over the next couple of weeks, I'll be sending out emails to some of you, in hopes that I can get you to answer a few questions about your placeblogs. The purpose? Just thought it would be nice to feature some of you on our front page....
This will be a totally random exercise--so if you don't hear from me, just drop me a line: tish at placeblogger.com. I'll gladly send you a few questions and feature you too....
